Karnataka is home to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in India. While Jog Falls and Shivanasamudra get all the attention and the crowds, there are hidden cascades tucked away in the Western Ghats that offer a more intimate, wild experience. The Charmadi Ghats, known for their dense forests and steep valleys, are home to some of the best.
Bandaje Arbi Falls
Located deep in the Charmadi Ghats, Bandaje Arbi is unique because it drops completely unhindered from a high grassland plateau into a deep, inaccessible valley. The trek to reach it is challenging (roughly 14km) but rewards you with an uninterrupted view of the falls and the surrounding peaks. Standing at the edge of the 200ft drop is an adrenaline rush like no other.
Ermayi and Didupe Falls
These twin waterfalls in the Dakshina Kannada region are perfect for a weekend escape. Didupe is a multi-tiered cascade that plummets into a shallow basin, creating a massive spray. Ermayi is quieter and allows you to safely swim in its natural, crystal-clear pool.

Safety First
Always respect the water in the Ghats. During monsoons, flash floods are incredibly common. A calm stream can turn into a raging torrent in minutes if it rains heavily upstream. The rocks surrounding these hidden falls are perpetually covered in slick moss and are extremely dangerous.
Never venture into unknown pools without local guidance, and always wear appropriate trekking footwear even when hiking to a waterfall.
