When the monsoon hits the western coast of India, the Western Ghats undergo a dramatic transformation. The dry brown hills turn into vibrant shades of green, waterfalls spring to life from every crevice, and the air becomes thick with mist and the smell of petrichor. For many, this is the absolute best time to trek.
However, monsoon trekking is not for the unprepared. The trails become notoriously slippery, the leeches come out in full force, and sudden downpours can catch you off guard. Here is everything you need to know to safely navigate the Western Ghats during the rainy season.
Essential Gear for the Rain
Your standard summer trekking gear will not survive a Western Ghats monsoon. You need to upgrade your kit.
A high-quality, breathable rain poncho or a waterproof hardshell jacket.
Trekking shoes with deep lugs. Vibram soles perform exceptionally well on wet rock.
Anti-leech socks (an absolute necessity for trails like Kumara Parvatha).
Dry bags for your electronics and a rain cover for your backpack.
A sturdy trekking pole to gauge trail depth and maintain balance on slippery descents.
There is no such thing as bad weather in the mountains, only inappropriate clothing.
Dealing with Leeches
If you are trekking the Ghats in July or August, you will encounter leeches. It is simply unavoidable. The best defense is a physical barrier: leech socks pulled up over your trousers. Additionally, you can apply a mixture of tobacco and castor oil, or simply carry a small packet of salt. Do not panic if you are bitten; they are harmless, though the bleeding can look dramatic.
Top Monsoon Trails
While some trails become too dangerous during peak monsoon, others come alive. We highly recommend:
Kudremukh: The rolling grasslands look like a Windows XP wallpaper.
Bandaje Arbi: The waterfall is at its most ferocious.
Tadiandamol: The highest peak in Coorg is covered in a mystical fog.
Safety First
Flash floods are a real danger when crossing mountain streams. If the water looks murky and the current is fast, do not cross. Always trust your Trek Leader's judgement. At Aarohana Trails, we closely monitor local weather patterns and forest department advisories before every departure.
Embrace the rain, pack smart, and you will experience the Western Ghats in their most pristine, breathtaking state.
